My son turned 2 over the weekend and when I was planning his party setup, I knew I wanted it to reflect him — fun, playful, and full of personality — while still feeling calm, warm, and welcoming for everyone attending.
Most of our guests were adults, so I didn’t want the setup to feel overly themed or crowded with decorations everywhere. I wanted it to feel more personal instead. Something that reflected who he is right now and the little things he loves, because I feel those details are what make a celebration more memorable.
That’s what I’ve realised matters most when styling any space or celebration as a mum: the little personal touches are usually what people remember most.
Keeping the Theme Simple
My son has an obsession with ducks, “Holy Duck I’m 2” instantly felt perfect.
But instead of covering every surface in ducks I tried to use the theme subtly through little details.
- My son’s rubber ducks placed around the table
- duck napkins and subtle decorations
- soft pastel cups and plates
- framed prints and personal photos
- flowers to soften the overall look
I wanted the space to still feel relaxed and inviting rather than visually overwhelmingly.
The Personal Touches That Made the Biggest Difference
Looking back, my favourite parts weren’t the decorations themselves — it was the meaningful details woven into the setup.
The framed photo and message.
My son’s little ducks scattered across the table.
The photo book I created with little notes inside describing his favourite things. It ended up being such a special piece for guests to look through and something I know I’ll love looking back on too.
Those small sentimental touches instantly made the party feel more personal and memorable without needing an extravagant setup.
I think sometimes we feel pressure to create these huge Pinterest-perfect parties for our kids, but our kids usually remember the feeling more than the perfection.
The laughter.
The attention.
The excitement.
The familiar things they love.
Why the Styling Worked Practically Too
As much as I love interiors and styling, I’m also realistic about motherhood.
I wanted the setup to:
- be affordable
- stress-free
- feel elevated without being difficult
- work for both adults and Kids
- Easy cleanup and setup/packup
- Be able to be present and enjoy my son’s birthday
Using disposable tableware in softer colours helped keep things practical while still looking cohesive. The textured green table runner added warmth and made the setup feel more styled without needing lots of extra decorations.
The flowers also helped balance the playful theme and made the space feel softer and more grown-up for the adults attending too.
What I’d Do Again
If there’s one thing this party reminded me, it’s that meaningful celebrations don’t need to be overcomplicated.
Sometimes the most special setups come from combining:
- Practical choices
- Sentimental details
- a theme that reflects your child’s current interest
- The feeling you want your guests to leave with
Not perfection.
Just warmth, personality, and memories tied to a moment in time you’ll never quite get back again.
At the end of the day, the decorations won’t be the thing I remember most about this birthday.
It’ll be watching him point excitedly at the ducks, seeing everyone gathered around the table, and knowing that the little details we included reflected exactly who he is in this season of life.
And honestly, I think that’s what makes a celebration feel special.
